Enlightenment
I WANT YOU ALL TO PAY VERY MUCH ATTENTION! I love's ya'll since ya'lls ain't sane at all! Enlightenment is always thought of as a halo? WRONG! -Not entirely, though Fundementally!- Enlightenment means to have the Fire in the Belly LIT! Your food has to physically BURN. So. All of you please share any tips, tricks, methods that you use to keep your belly on fire!!!! That is enlightenment, because only then does food turn into energy properly and feed the brain and body. Gesulentday is coming up soon, I have only said Abracadabra once so far and I have had rather severe unluck in enlightening anyone, let alone myself... Our goal, here, as Buddhists is to attain a fire in the belly that literally physically BURNS into energy! The meditation is for that we don't turn into raging psychotic morons when we are blessed with this excess energy to prevent suffering and to repair the planet :D All Clear On This? |

Downloading and Theft
Here is a question: Does downloading copywritten material, such as music and scanned books, constitute theft in the moral sense? I'm aware that in some jurisdictions it is defined as "theft", but that is a legal (or perhaps just the lobby groups') definition devised in recent decades. I personally don't see copying and sharing electronic data to constitute theft. Theft in my mind is intentionally physically depriving someone of something. One has to conceive of an object as belonging to somebody else, have the intention to steal it and physically take the object away. Taking a book away from the library without checking it out is theft, but photocopying the entire thing is not theft. Likewise with digital data. It is just copying and pasting the data. Was it theft in the days of old when somebody learned your song and shared it with others? We should also stop and consider that copying and sharing Buddhist scriptures is traditionally considered a meritorious act. Nowadays if I should scan Red Pine's translation of the Diamond Sutra and send it to you, I'm apparently guilty of theft! It might constitute an infringement of copyright laws, but that doesn't mean it constitutes theft in a moral sense. Also consider that even if you legitimately purchase and download mp3 files you cannot resell them. However, if you buy a CD you can most certainly resell it. The former is apparently theft, the later is not. |

Pink Tentacle reports that researchers at Japan’s ATR Computational Neuroscience Laboratories have developed a system that can "reconstruct the images inside a person’s mind and display them on a computer monitor."
The scientists were able to reconstruct various images viewed by a person by analyzing changes in their cerebral blood flow. Using a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) machine, the researchers first mapped the blood flow changes that occurred in the cerebral visual cortex as subjects viewed various images held in front of their eyes. Subjects were shown 400 random 10 x 10 pixel black-and-white images for a period of 12 seconds each. While the fMRI machine monitored the changes in brain activity, a computer crunched the data and learned to associate the various changes in brain activity with the different image designs.
Then, when the test subjects were shown a completely new set of images, such as the letters N-E-U-R-O-N, the system was able to reconstruct and display what the test subjects were viewing based solely on their brain activity.Original ArticleWhat do you think of this? Thinking Excercise Time!
The Joker has locked you in a concrete room. There is nothing else in the room, except a loaded 9mm pistol in your hands. There is one door to the room, which has a square window at head level. The Joker is on the other side of the door, and he is looking through the window, so you can just see his face. You are aiming at his face, and you have to decide whether to kill him or not. If you don't shoot, you know he will go on to kill many people. You don't know who he will kill, or when he will do it, but he has a strong tendency to kill, and he likes it. He kills a few people every week, at least. So he taunts you with this. You have to decide whether to take his life right now, or let him go. You know that logically more life will be spared by killing him, yet you also know that the Joker is insane, and has no real choice but to kill. He is driven by his dementia. You feel compassion for the Joker, but the logic is undeniable. In honesty, what do you do? Do you take the shot or not? ps- this is just a game. Renouncing the Dharma
Are you willing to renounce the Dharma on your deathbed if it gave comfort to your Christian relatives? Ajahn Brahm made passing mention of this dilemma in one of his videos, and recommending doing do (and quickly converting back when they've left). I see a serious problem in this. The deathbed conversion is a trophy in Christianity, especially if you've dedicated your life to countering their corrosive ideology and mystism. Christians even stoop as low as fabricating conversions of predominate figures such as Darwin and Einstein in hopes of unraveling their influence against the Christian meme. So, when Auntie McChristian comes to your deathbed to procure your soul for her malevolent deva with one last round of emotional extortion, what is the Right Action? Do you stand for what you believe in, and by doing so preserve the advice, teachings and positive influence you've given others? Or do you Ajahn Brahm it by betraying the Dharma, thereby converting your legacy to a propaganda tool in the hands of evil? |
